Thomas's
Passion
In
the summer of 2002, long before anyone had heard
of Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ movie,
Thomas was already working on an extremely moving
portrait of Christ carrying the cross called for
you.
At
the time Thomas said, " This painting is unique
because I don't usually do paintings about the life
of Jesus." In what seems in retrospect a prophetic
vision of the interest and controversy surrounding
Gibson's portrayal of the last day and crucifixion
of Christ, for you was designed to "show the
torment and burden and suffering that he went through
for us, " Thomas said. " I wanted this
painting to bring home to the viewer what Jesus
truly did."
Now,
two years after its conception, Blackshear enthusiasts
can soon look forward to the release of "For
You" from Blackshear Enterprises - just in
time to bring home the message of Christ's ultimate
sacrifice.
As
for The Passion of the Christ, Thomas is enthusiastic
about the film. " It was really powerful",
he said. "He (Mel Gibson) really did it right.
What's surprising to me is that, in the history
of the cinema, it's taken this long for someone
to do it right. It is the most realistic portrayal
of the Lord that I have ever seen."

Thomas
Blackshear's vision of this timeless classic combines
his supreme artistry with the art of storytelling.
"I've always been interested in turn-of-the-century
art that combines dreamlike quality with strong
design", Blackshear says. "Influenced
by Gustav Klimt and Maxfield Parrish, I've always
wanted to capture their romantic, symbolic quality."
The butterflies on either side of the lovers
represent the beast's metamorphisis, and Blackshear's
delicate attention to detail gives the piece a special
radiance, the background suggesting Klimt's elegant
style. "My version of this classic story
about a beauty and a beast shows the union of two
very different people who share one thing -- love,"
Blackshear says.

A
Common Thread, represents the different races and
the spirit of God as the common thread that ties
them all together.
There's
a golden thread that comes down from heaven and
it hits the shoulder of the black man and makes
an African design on his clothing," Thomas
explains. "Then it hops off his clothing
and onto an Asian woman and makes an Oriental design
on her clothing. Then it goes down to the
white woman and makes a Celtic design around her
clothing. Next it goes to the native American
and makes a native American design on his clothing
and then back to the black man's shoulder and off
the page. Each person is holding a candle
that represents the spirit of God in their life.
